Gandmool Nakshatra

Rashi, Nakshatra and Charan
Before knowing about the Gandmool Nakshatras, it is very important for us to have a clear picture of the Nakshatras in our mind, so first we will be sharing with you, few basics of the Nakshatra Concept in Astrology.
There are 28 Nakshatras in Indian Astrology out of which only 6 Nakshatras are Gandmool.
Vedic astrology distribute zodiac into 28 parts. These 28 parts are known as Nakshatra. All these nakshatras have a few qualities on which they are distinguished, these are:
  1. They have Gunas which characterizes their type of energy, which according to vedic astrology are Sattva, Rajas & Tamas Gunas.
  2. In Astrology, the nakshatra has a relationship with the Navamsa Kundli which represents the Mind and Soul of a native.
  3. The nakshatra of the horoscope are also concerned with the aims of life that are Dharma, Artha, Kaam and Moksha.
  4. Other characteristics of Nakshatra of vedic astrology include the Tattva (element), deity, planet, nature, temperament, animal type etc.
Each Rashi has 9 Charanas and each Nakshatra has 4 Charanas, which implied that each rashi composed of 2.25 Nakshatras. Since each rashi is vedic astrology is of approximately 60 hours so each Nakshatra is of 25 hours, which in turn means that each charana of the Nakshatra is of about 6.66 hours.

Originally in Indian Astrology there are 28 Nakshatras but 'Abhijit Nakshatra', one of them is of very short duration and hence is not considered in Indian Horoscopes, so majorly only 27 Nakshatras appear for the 12 Rashis, these nakshatras with their rashi divisions are as mentioned below:

Which Nakshatras are the Gandmool Nakshatras?

The Nakshatras ruled by Mercury or Ketu are called Gand Mool Nakshatras.
Out of 27 Nakshatras, The 6 Nakshatras which are ruled by Mercury or Ketu (Gand Mool Nakshatras) are as follows:-
  • Ashwini
  • Ashlesha
  • Magha
  • Jyeshtha
  • Mool
  • Revati
These 6 Nakshatras are considered inauspicious. But basically gandmool is considered in the charanas/padas where transition occurs between a watery & fiery sign. So basically, this transition occurs between the following signs:
  • Aries-Pisces
  • Sagittarius-Scorpio
  • Leo-Cancer
So the last charan of the zodiac coming first & the first charan of the zodiac coming next is consdered as mool. Hence 1st Chranas of Ashwini, Magha & Mool nakshatras are considered more inauspicious than other 3 charanas. Whereas, last that is 4th Charana of Revati, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha are more inauspicious than the first 3 Charanas. Based on this interpretation below is the tabular description of the Nakshatra-Charan effects.
More precisely below is the time of each Gandmool Nakshatra that is the most Inauspicious:
  • Starting 3 Ghatis of Ashwini
  • Ending 12 Ghatis of Rewati
  • Starting 4 Ghatis of Magha
  • Ending 11 Ghatis of Ashlesha
  • Starting 9 Ghatis of Mool
  • Ending 6 Ghatis of Jyeshtha
